    Several African countries want to overcome this difficulty by teaching the first school lessons (reading and writing, arithmetic) in an African language that children understand, which will help them continue their studies in French. The aim is to promote the gradual development of bilingual primary education in eight countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, DR Congo, Mali, Niger and Senegal), combining the use of African languages at beginning of the primary cycle with French, which will continue to be the teaching language at the end of the primary cycle
